Thailand is set to reclassify cannabis as a medical product, aligning with the United States’ recent move to shift the plant from Schedule I to Schedule III, cutting research hurdles, taxes and financing obstacles for the industry.

Pattana confirmed that Thailand has already begun updating relevant laws and legislation to bring its framework in line with global standards.
The new framework will regulate cultivation, sales, distribution, processing and use, and the ministry has drafted broad guidelines for implementation.
“After Songkran, once the government is fully formed, this will be another issue we will push forward,” Pattana said.
“We confirm that cannabis will be developed for medical purposes within the health economy. We will also upgrade various extracts so they become quality extracts, are properly used and create the greatest possible economic impact. This will be our focus.”
