Man Arrested for Drug Possession in Pietermaritzburg CBD During Multi‑Disciplinary Operation
A man was arrested in a multi‑disciplinary operation in the Pietermaritzburg Central Business District on Thursday morning for possession of drugs. It is alleged he had been travelling to the area to deliver them.
Details of the Arrest
Red and white capsules were found in his possession, concealed inside a grey packet. The arrest took place as part of a broader law‑enforcement sweep targeting various illicit activities in the city centre.

Operation Scope and Objectives
The operation is being led by the KwaZulu‑Natal Provincial South African Police Service (SAPS). Officers are checking pawn shops, illegal liquor outlets, and the compliance of legal businesses, while also apprehending undocumented foreign nationals. Msunduzi Traffic Officials and the Department of Labour are participating in the effort.
According to KZN Provincial SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the initiative aims to enforce the law and improve public safety in Pietermaritzburg.
Authorities’ Comments
Colonel Netshiunda stated, “So far, more than 30 undocumented illegal foreign nationals have been arrested during the ongoing operation,” adding that police will continue to investigate the drug‑related incident further.
He emphasised that the multi‑agency approach is designed to address multiple facets of criminal activity, thereby strengthening overall security in the CBD.
