Two men, aged 23 and 35, were arrested after illicit cigarettes worth nearly R2 million were found hidden beneath a load of coal at the Groblersbrug Port of Entry in Limpopo.
Border Policing and Customs officers received tip‑off information at 11 am, positioned themselves at the port and intercepted the truck entering the checkpoint.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the vehicle was taken to a searching area, the coal was offloaded and bags containing 4,800 cartons of Remington Gold and Swan cigarettes were uncovered.
The seized cartons, valued at approximately R1 996 800, represent a major blow to the illicit tobacco trade.
SAPS confirmed that the operation is part of nationwide efforts to dismantle the illegal manufacturing, distribution and sale of counterfeit and illicit goods.
