CBD floods the Dutch market, cheap and easy to find.
What is CBD?
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the two main cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. It does not produce a high, yet it has surged in popularity since the mid‑2010s.
THC versus CBD
THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, is the psychoactive compound that creates a high; CBD does not alter brain chemistry. Users can therefore enjoy CBD’s effects without seeing “pink elephants.”
Is CBD legal in the Netherlands?
Cannabis is tolerated but not legal; the same rule applies to CBD. The Dutch Opium Act classifies CBD as a soft drug (List II) and allows sales in specialised stores, coffeeshops, and online as long as THC stays below 0.5 %.
How does CBD work?
CBD binds to receptors in the endocannabinoid system and blocks THC’s activation of those receptors, producing a calming effect rather than intoxication. The system regulates sleep, mood, appetite and memory.
Is CBD a miracle cure‑it‑all?
Testimonials and early studies claim CBD helps anxiety, epilepsy, chronic pain, arthritis and even cancer. The New York Times reports that 60 % of 5,000 surveyed users take CBD for anxiety. Scientific evidence is still emerging, but trials show promising reductions in anxiety and seizure frequency.
Scientific evidence
A 2011 study found CBD reduced anxiety during a public‑speaking test versus placebo, and a review of eight recent trials showed the substance is well‑tolerated with minimal adverse effects. For epilepsy, a Healthline‑cited study reported a 44 % seizure reduction, compared with 22 % in the control group. Additional research links CBD to reduced inflammation and chronic pain.
Safety
Side effects are rare; reported issues include dizziness, nausea, dry mouth and low blood pressure, all generally mild. Consumers should follow dosage instructions on product labels or ask store staff for guidance.
Where to buy
CBD products are sold online and in physical shops across the Netherlands, including coffeeshops that keep THC under 0.5 %. Buyers should choose reputable brands that test for quality, as regulatory oversight remains limited.
