The Rise of CBD‑Infused Herbal Spliffs

In recent years, cannabidiol (CBD) has moved beyond oils and tinctures into a variety of lifestyle products—from sparkling waters to artisanal soaps. Boutique fitness studios and upscale grocers now display CBD‑laden items with careful attention to packaging, signaling that consumers associate the compound with a polished, wellness‑focused aesthetic. Among the newest entrants are pre‑rolled herbal spliffs that blend hemp flower with botanicals such as peppermint, jasmine, raspberry leaf, and sage.

What Is CBD and How Does It Differ From THC?

CBD is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike delta‑9‑tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it does not produce the intoxicating “high” associated with marijuana. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp‑derived CBD is legal in the United States provided the plant contains less than 0.3 % THC by dry weight. This threshold distinguishes hemp from marijuana, which typically exceeds that limit and can cause psychoactive effects.

Research from the World Health Organization (2018) notes that CBD exhibits a good safety profile and is not associated with abuse potential. However, the agency also cautions that product quality varies widely, underscoring the importance of third‑party testing and transparent labeling.

Barbari’s Approach to a “Focus‑Enhancing” Spliff

Founded by Meryl Montgomery and Valarie Sakota, Barbari launched its first pre‑rolled CBD spliff earlier this year. The product combines organic hemp flower with peppermint, jasmine flower, raspberry leaf, and sage—herbs the founders say contribute to the entourage effect, a theory suggesting that various plant compounds work together to modulate the overall experience.

According to Montgomery, the blend is crafted to support concentration and “productive moments.” Sakota compares the ritual to stepping outside for a cigarette break: a brief pause that can help reset attention before returning to work. She also notes that, when consumed in moderation with alcohol, the spliff may help maintain clarity rather than exacerbate impairment, though individual responses can vary.

Safety, Legality, and Responsible Use

Smoking any plant material carries inherent risks, including irritation to the respiratory tract and exposure to combustion byproducts. Users should be aware that, despite low THC content, hemp buds can resemble marijuana in appearance and aroma, potentially leading to confusion in public spaces. In states where THC remains prohibited, a CBD‑only spliff offers a legal alternative for those seeking the purported focusing benefits without intoxication.

Health professionals advise starting with a modest amount to gauge personal tolerance, staying hydrated, and avoiding use if you have underlying respiratory conditions. Consulting a healthcare provider is recommended, especially for individuals who are pregnant, nursing, or taking prescription medications that could interact with cannabinoids.
