US‑based Panda Biotech has teamed up with India’s Culturewell Trading LLP to bring certified industrial hemp fibre from American farms into India’s textile supply chain. The collaboration, first reported by Hemp Gazette, aims to give Indian manufacturers a reliable source of sustainable, traceable raw material that meets the strict standards demanded by global brands.

Meeting Demand for Sustainable Textile Inputs

India’s textile industry ranks among the world’s largest producers of yarn, fabric, denim, garments, technical textiles and home furnishings. International buyers are increasingly scrutinising the environmental footprint of their supply chains, asking for verifiable data on fibre origin, chemical safety and bio‑based content. This shift creates a clear opening for industrial hemp, a fibre known for low water use, minimal pesticide requirements and a strong carbon‑sequestration profile.

Under the agreement, Culturewell Hemp will act as the authorised importer and distributor for Panda Biotech’s US‑grown hemp fibre within India. The partnership is designed to create a steady pipeline of high‑performance fibre that can be spun into yarns, woven into fabrics or blended with other natural fibres for a variety of end‑uses.

Bridging Market Gaps and Scaling Adoption

Company officials say the initiative tackles a critical barrier: the lack of scalable, consistently certified hemp fibre that meets export‑grade quality. Dixie Carter, President of Panda Biotech, noted that Indian mills are actively seeking fibres that can compete on price, performance and sustainability. She added that Culturewell’s established distribution network across the sub‑continent will help accelerate adoption, from small‑scale units to large integrated manufacturers.

The collaboration rests on three core principles:

  • Combining Panda Biotech’s mechanically processed hemp fibre with Culturewell’s extensive market reach throughout India.
  • Promoting the uptake of industrial hemp fibre across the diverse textile ecosystem, from artisanal mills to major production hubs.
  • Meeting the rising demand from international buyers for verified, eco‑friendly fibres that comply with global sustainability standards.

Certifications, Traceability, and Economic Advantages of Industrial Hemp Fibre

Each bale of hemp fibre shipped under this arrangement will carry OEKO‑TEX STANDARD 100 and USDA BioPreferred certifications. These third‑party labels assure manufacturers that the fibre meets stringent limits on harmful substances and contains a verified proportion of renewable bio‑based content—credentials that are increasingly required by export‑oriented brands.

Traceability is built into the supply chain. Panda Biotech’s system records every step from field to factory, allowing Indian processors to confirm the origin, cultivation practices and processing methods of the fibre. This level of transparency supports ethical sourcing claims and helps brands satisfy tightening due‑diligence requirements from regulators and consumers alike.

Economic benefits also arise from the fibre’s US origin. When imported into India and subsequently re‑exported, the material may qualify for preferential tariff treatment in certain markets, offering a cost advantage compared with fibres sourced from Europe or China. Moreover, the sustainability narrative attached to certified, low‑impact hemp resonates with environmentally conscious consumers, giving brands a compelling story to accompany their products.

By providing Indian textile mills with a certified, traceable and competitively priced hemp fibre option, the Panda Biotech–Culturewell partnership signals a broader industry movement toward greener inputs. The initiative not only helps meet global demand for sustainable textiles but also contributes to a more resilient and responsible supply chain.
