Go Easy in Oak Cliff Prepares for Closure Amid Texas Hemp Ban

When Molly Mathias opened her cannabis shop in Dallas’ Bishop Arts district six years ago, she envisioned a welcoming space that contrasted with the often intimidating tone of existing retailers. Go Easy was designed to be women‑led, self‑care focused, and approachable for newcomers to hemp‑derived products.

However, shifting legal tides in Texas have forced Mathias to announce that the shop will close its doors permanently after July 31, 2026. The closure follows a state ban on smokeable hemp products and items containing delta‑8, delta‑10, and several other cannabinoids, set to take effect that day.

Impact on Small Businesses Across the State

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, more than 9,000 businesses currently hold licenses to sell hemp products in Texas. For many of these operators, smokeable items have represented a substantial portion of revenue. Mathias estimated that roughly half of Go Easy’s sales came from smokeable hemp, a share echoed by Craig Katz of MNG Brands, who noted that comparable products accounted for at least 50 % of sales in Texas shops.

The impending prohibition leaves small retailers in a precarious position. Larger chains that focus on non‑smokeable formats—such as edibles, gummies, and beverages—can continue operating, while independent shops like Go Easy face a steep competitive disadvantage. Mathias explained that without the ability to sell smokeable products, sustaining the business model would be untenable.

Industry Voices on Regulation Versus Prohibition

Both Mathias and industry experts emphasize that the hemp sector is not opposed to regulation; rather, they argue that clear, consistent rules are preferable to outright bans. Katz, who manages government relations and compliance for MNG Brands—a company operating 55 cannabis locations across five states—stressed that his team has become adept at swiftly adjusting inventory to meet new legal requirements.

“We’re not against regulation. We’re absolutely for regulation. We’ve been asking for regulation for years,” Katz said. “From a governmental standpoint it’s much easier to control what is getting to consumers if you’re regulating than if you’re prohibiting.”

He warned that prohibitions often push consumers toward untested black‑market products, creating safety risks that regulated markets aim to mitigate.

Looking Ahead: Relocation and Continued Online Presence

Although the physical Oak Cliff location will shut down, Go Easy will maintain an online storefront. Mathias has relocated to New York, where she is pursuing a license to sell cannabis, and plans to bring several employees with her.

She expressed mixed feelings about leaving Texas, noting her personal connection to the state and desire to continue contributing to its economy. “We grew up in Texas. We care about Texas. We want to pay taxes in Texas,” Mathias remarked. “It just feels like you’re back in time a little bit, you know? They want you to leave the state.”

The experience of Go Easy mirrors that of other hemp‑focused enterprises, such as Wild Revival in Denton, which, while not directly affected by the smokeable product ban, has already lost seven partner shops that provided community‑oriented, non‑alcoholic gathering spaces.
