Hempcrete is finally breaking through construction barriers

Hempcrete homes deliver superior climate control and cleaner indoor air, yet material access, education gaps, and strict regulations have kept them off suburban sidewalks.

Contractors lack the training needed to install hempcrete, a porous, non‑structural insulation that does not replace concrete. Without clear guidance, the material cannot be applied correctly, keeping hemp homes out of mainstream construction.

Hempitecture, an Idaho‑based supplier of Hempwool and hempcrete, has built a training program and an energy‑efficient plant. In 2017 the firm completed the first public‑use building made from hemp materials, and it remains in service today.

“We provide natural‑fiber insulation and Hempcrete for the most radically sustainable buildings on the planet,” Meade said to GreenState. “Our products store carbon in the fiber and in the soil, reducing emissions while improving indoor air quality.”

Hempire USA, the U.S. arm of a Ukraine‑based construction company, also offers hemp building products to American buyers.

Putting the work into action

The Highland Hemp House in Bellingham, Washington, showcases a carbon‑negative, breathable home built with hempcrete and lime. Founder Pamela Bosch secured financing that bypassed early insurance and permitting obstacles.

When construction started, many contractors viewed hempcrete as a mystery because no standardized methods existed. “Building with hemp and lime is not difficult or expensive,” Bosch told GreenState.

The International Code Council updated its Residential Code in March to include hempcrete, and the ASTM created a hemp subcommittee in 2017 to set performance standards, giving inspectors a clear testing protocol.

Bosch warns that large‑scale adoption will lag without financial incentives for builders and manufacturers. “Inertia to protect current revenue streams slows the shift to healthy, carbon‑negative methods,” she said.

Legislation freeing the plant

Washington state Senate Bill 5376, passed at the start of the year, makes THC‑free organic cannabis waste such as stems, stalks, and fan leaves eligible for composting or reuse, and allows growers to sell the material.

Sen. Derek Stanford (D‑Bothell) said the law will cut landfill waste and lower costs for the industry. “The cannabis sector generates a large compostable waste stream that currently ends in landfills; this bill creates a better environmental and economic path,” he explained.

Hemp building is closer than ever

U.S. manufacturers now produce hempcrete and related materials, and legislation eases access to hemp stalks and hurds. Code approvals from the ICC and ASTM provide the regulatory foundation for widespread use.

Industry leaders such as Meade, Bosch, and Stanford have paved the way, but sustained belief and investment are needed to turn hemp construction into a mainstream practice.
