Police eased restrictions on Nairobi’s Central Business District on Sunday, allowing Linda Mwananchi leaders and supporters to proceed with their rallies amid heavy security deployment.
Police Commander Orders CBD Closure
Nairobi Police Commander Issa Mohamud had directed that the CBD stay off‑limits during the planned rallies, but early morning checks showed no major roadblocks on main routes into the city and the CBD remained calm as residents went about their business.
Confrontation at All Saints Cathedral
At All Saints Cathedral, officers blocked the entrance to control a large crowd of supporters, allowing only senior Linda Mwananchi leaders into the 9 am service.
Supporters who tried to force their way in clashed with police at the entrance, sparking a brief confrontation that police quickly contained.
Anti‑riot officers on horseback arrived at 10:25 am to reinforce security as the number of supporters wearing Linda Mwananchi merchandise grew.
Leaders Walk to Service
Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, Bomachoge Borabu MP Obadiah Barongo, Funyula MP Wilberforce Oundo and Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo abandoned their vehicles a few metres from the church and walked to the service.
Congregants expressed frustration as police separated them from the rally crowd, while church coordinators helped identify worshippers at the entrance.
Convoy Moves to Marikiti
After the service, leaders streamed out and joined a convoy that moved along Haile Selassie Avenue.
Police briefly blocked the convoy at the Haile Selassie Avenue junction, redirecting boda boda riders and leader‑carrying vehicles to an alternate route.
After ten minutes of discussion, officers permitted the convoy to continue, and additional officers stood by at the Moi Avenue roundabout near the Bomb Blast Memorial Park.
At Marikiti, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino thanked police for their security, pledging higher police salaries once the movement takes power.
City Remains Calm
Despite the heavy security presence and earlier threats to restrict CBD access, the city stayed largely calm with businesses operating normally as supporters moved through the planned rally routes.
