Severe Thunderstorm Watch 506 Issued for Parts of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio

The National Weather Service has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch 506, which remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT this evening. The watch covers a broad swath of the Tri‑State area, including multiple counties in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. A severe thunderstorm watch indicates that conditions are favorable for the development of storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning. While a watch does not guarantee severe weather, it urges residents to stay alert and prepared.

Areas Under the Watch

In Indiana, the watch includes eight counties: Fayette, Union, and Wayne in east‑central Indiana; Dearborn, Franklin, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland in southeast Indiana.

In Kentucky, twelve counties are affected: Lewis in northeastern Kentucky; Boone, Bracken, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Kenton, Mason, Owen, Pendleton, and Robertson in northern Kentucky.

In Ohio, twenty‑nine counties fall within the watch: Central Ohio – Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Hocking, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, Union; South Central Ohio – Adams, Highland, Pike, Ross, Scioto; Southwest Ohio – Brown, Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton, Warren; West Central Ohio – Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, Shelby.

The watch also encompasses numerous cities and towns across the region, including Aberdeen, Alexandria, Augusta, Aurora, Batesville, Beavercreek, Bellefontaine, Bellevue, Blanchester, Bright, Brooksville, Brookville, Burlington, Butler, Camden, Camp Dix, Carrollton, Chillicothe, Circleville, Connersville, Covington, Crittenden, Day Heights, Dayton, Delaware, Dillsboro, Downtown Cincinnati, Downtown Columbus, Downtown Dayton, Dry Ridge, Eaton, Erlanger, Fairborn, Fairfield, Falmouth, Florence, Fort Thomas, Franklin, Georgetown, Greendale, Greenfield, Greenville, Hamilton, Head of Grassy, Hidden Valley, Highland Heights, Hillboro, Independence, Kettering, Lancaster, Landen, Lawrenceburg, Lebanon, Liberty, Logan, London, Manchester, Marysville, Mason, Maysville, Middletown, Milan, Milford, Mount Carmel, Mount Olivet, Mount Orab, Mount Repose, Mulberry, Newark, Newport, Oakbrook, Osgood, Owenton, Oxford, Pebbles, Pickerington, Pike Lake, Piketon, Piqua, Plain City, Portsmouth, Richmond, Ripley, Rising Sun, Seaman, Sidney, Springboro, Springfield, Summerside, Tipp City, Tollesboro, Troy, Urbana, Vanceburg, Versailles, Vevay, Warsaw, Washington Court House, Waverly, West College Corner, West Jefferson, West Union, Wheelersburg, Williamstown, Wilmington, Winchester, Withamsville, and Xenia.

What Residents Should Do

During a severe thunderstorm watch, the National Weather Service recommends the following precautions:

• Monitor local forecasts and alerts through a reliable source such as a NOAA Weather Radio, smartphone alerts, or trusted news outlets.

• Secure outdoor objects that could become projectiles in strong winds, such as patio furniture, grills, and trash cans.

• Avoid travel if possible, especially in areas prone to flash flooding; if driving is necessary, keep headlights on and reduce speed.

• Seek shelter indoors, away from windows, and avoid using electrical appliances plugged into wall outlets during the storm.

• Keep an emergency kit handy, including water, non‑perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and a first‑aid supply.

These steps help reduce risk and ensure you can respond quickly if a warning is issued later in the evening.

Staying Informed

The National Weather Service, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provides continuous updates on evolving weather conditions. For the most current information on Watch 506, visit the NWS website for your local forecast office or enable push notifications from a reputable weather app. Reliable information from official meteorological agencies supports timely decision‑making and enhances community safety.
